U.S. closes consulate in Ciudad Juarez

Voice of America

The United States has closed its consulate in the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juarez for a security evaluation, three months after drug gangs killed three people linked to the diplomatic post.

The U.S. Embassy in Mexico City warned U.S. citizens to avoid the area around the consulate until it reopens. A statement did not say when the consulate would resume operations.

Ciudad Juarez, across the U.S. border from El Paso, Texas, is considered Mexico's most violent city because of drug-related violence. Thousands of people have been killed in the border town since 2009.
